October 2013 RIIL Student Athletes of the Month
Sarah Andrews from North Kingstown High School, and Alex Southiere from Cumberland High School, have been named winners of the RIIL Student Athlete of the Month for October 2013.
Sarah is a junior at North Kingstown High School, a member of the Girls' Soccer, Swim, and Track teams at North Kingstown High School. She holds an annual fundraiser to benefit the Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County. Over the past few years, her events raised over $3,000. Sarah also coaches youth soccer at Ocean State Soccer Club. She takes all honors courses and ranks #1 in her class of 358. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, NKHS Leadership Academy, and NKHS Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse. She was chosen as the NKHS Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Ambassador for the Class of 2015, is 1st Chair Trombone in the NKHS Symphonic Band and Senior Jazz Band and earned the Class of 2015 top history student awards after her freshman and sophomore years.
Alex is a senior at Cumberland High School, Captain of the Cumberland High School Cross Country Team and All-Division past three years. He organized a cleanup of the Monastery Grounds in Cumberland. In the community, Alex participated in the Franklin Farm Road Race to benefit the Rhode Island Food Bank. He also assisted with the Cumberlandfest which benefits youth athletics in town. Alex is also a gifted musician and plays in the high school jazz band. He is a National Honor Society member and has devoted many hours to tutoring students. Alex has challenged himself by taking AP and honors classes throughout his high school career and is ranked in the top ten percent of a class of 350.
