February 2014 Burger King Student Athletes of the Month
Candice Kowalik from Warwick Veterans High School, and Zachery Emrich from North Kingstown High School, have been named winners of the Burger King Student Athlete of the Month for February 2014.
Candice is a junior at Warwick Veterans High School and participates in gymnastics. She set the new state record for the highest points ever scored in the state gymnastics meet. Candice won the overall state championship as an individual and led her team to the Division II State Championship. She leads by example as a member of the Leadership Academy. In the community, she was instrumental in organizing a school wide fundraiser “Pink Out” raising money for cancer as well as volunteering her time at the Rhode Island food bank. Candice is an honor roll student taking honors level classes.
Zach is a senior at North Kingstown High School. He is a three-sport athlete participating in Boys’ Cross Country, Boys’ Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field as well as being team captain. Zach was the first athlete in the history of Boys’ Indoor Track to win the 600 meter and 300 meter double at this year’s Rhode Island State Indoor Track Championships. In the community, Zach participated in various road races. He is a member of Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse and jazz band. Zach is in the top 10% of his class and will be attending Brown University in the fall.
