January 2014 Burger King Student Athletes of the Month
Victoria Libby from Burrillville High School, and Joseph Mattson from Rogers High School, have been named winners of the Burger King Student Athlete of the Month for January 2014.
Victoria is a senior at Burrillville High School. She is a three-sport athlete participating in Girls’ Soccer, Girls’ Basketball and Fastpitch Softball and 2011 MVP in Fastpitch Softball as well as being captain of all three sports she participates in. Victoria has been the class president for the past four years. She not only organizes and runs the Homecoming Float Committee, but she also establishes Bronco Palooza, which is an event that is run like a carnival. In 2012, she was selected from the graduating class of 2014 as a sophomore to represent her school in the Hough O’Brian Youth Leadership Program. In the community, she participated in church dinners where she served families food in order to help raise money. Also, she is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars while taking advance placement classes.
Joseph is a senior at Rogers High School and participates on the Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field teams. He qualified for the national competition in the weight throw and was the Class C weight champion this past spring. Joseph also won the Class C and Newport County Hammer Championships and is Captain of both the Indoor and Outdoor teams. In the community, he volunteered to help package and deliver left over food to local charities on Aquidneck Island and also participated in a bake sale that benefited the Hasbro Children’s Hospital. In addition, he is a member of the Jazz Ensemble and robotics team. Joseph spent two summers interning at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society with a 3.85 GPA while taking advance placement classes.
