March 2014 Burger King Student Athlete of the Month
Carol Rodriguez from Shea High School, and John Altieri from Warwick Veterans High School, have been named winners of the RIIL Student Athlete of the Month for March 2014.
Carol is a junior at Shea High School. She is a three sport athlete participating in Girls’ Volleyball, Girls’ Basketball and Fastpitch Softball as well as being co-captain of the basketball and volleyball team. Carol has obtained second and third team honors in all three sports. She was twice featured in the picture of the day in the Blackstone Valley Times. In the community, she is a peer tutor, member of the recycling club and was recently involved in a school wide fight for hunger with the Pawtucket Backpackers Association and participated in a Pennies for Patients drive for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. She is also an outstanding student taking college level courses.
John is a senior at Warwick Veterans High School and participates in wrestling. He overcame an early season torn labrum and dislocated shoulder to become only the fourth high school wrestler to win four consecutive Rhode Island State Championships. He leads by example as a member of the school’s Leadership Academy. In the community, he volunteers his time helping raise awareness for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation as well as volunteering his time at the Rhode Island food bank. In addition, John spends one night a week teaching Warwick PAL Wrestlers and is an honor roll student.
