March 2019 Showcase Cinemas Student Athlete of the Month
Mary Breen of Classical High School and Theo Mihailides of Ponaganset High School have been named winners of the Showcase Cinemas Athlete of the Month for March 2019.

Mary is a senior leader on the Classical High School Girls Basketball team. She provides valuable support to the team and is an excellent role model. Her execution of time management is phenomenal. During the basketball season, Mary has been participating on the math team, mock trial, quiz bowl, academic decathlon, and applying to college just to name a few things. She juggles a variety of commitments and takes them all seriously. Mary missed our opening round playoff game because she had to be in Georgia interviewing for a Foundation Fellow at UGA. She returned to practice and was there for the quarterfinal and semifinal playoff games. Again, Mary was faced with a scheduling conflict. Her team was playing in the divisional championship and she was scheduled to be in Texas interviewing for a scholarship at UT Dallas. Mary left for Dallas at 5:30 in the morning on Friday following our semifinal game. Scheduled to be back on Sunday, her flight was delayed until Tuesday because of the snow storm. Her flight arrived late Tuesday evening and was back in school Wednesday and dressed for our opening round state tournament game against Coventry in North Kingstown. She is a great teammate and sparks our team when she is on the court. She is truly one of a kind.

Theo is a three-sport varsity athlete at Ponaganset (football, wrestling, lacrosse) and is an excellent student (~3.25 cumulative GPA). But Ponaganset athletic director Tom Marcello nominated Theo for a different reason: Theo has donated countless hours to our Unified Athletes and raised over $8,000 for the Special Olympics Rhode Island Unified Polar Plunge over the past four years. Theo is the highest individual fundraiser for Ponaganset over the past three years. The Chieftains as a team have earned distinction as the Highest Grossing School for the past two years thanks in large part to Theo's enthusiasm and commitment to the mission of the Unified Champion Schools Program.
