October 2018 Showcase Cinemas Student Athlete of the Month
Maile Somera from Barrington High School and Jack Perreault from North Kingstown High School have been named winners of the Showcase Cinemas Athlete of the Month for October 2018.
Maile has a 4.18 GPA, and has volunteered for the BHS Afterprom fundraising, National Honors society tutor, and the BHS clothing drive. She has successfully led our team to a 13-2 record, securing the second seed for the Division I playoffs. On October 18th she helped lead us to a 3-0 victory over rival Coventry HS with 23 kills, 8 digs, and 2 aces. Earlier this month, Maile reached 1,000 career kills and 1,283 as of today with a .460 hitting percentage. She is nearing 400 kills and 200 digs this season, and maintains a serving percentage of 93% with 44 aces. As the sole captain and one of only two seniors, Maile has taken her leadership skills to a new level, it’s truly like having an assistant coach on the floor. All the while Maile displays the utmost respect and sportsmanship to her coaches, teammates, opponents, referees, and fans alike. Maile is an exceptional student-athlete and has displayed her best this past month both on the court and in the classrooms.
Jack is considered one of, if not the top student-athlete at North Kingstown High School. He is a three sport athlete - cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field. He has a 3.8 GPA, receiving the Principal's Honor Roll for every quarter and is a member of VAASA (Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse). As an athlete, he has been named a captain during his Junior and Senior year for cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field (named last season). In cross country was named most improved, Team MVP of Cross country and was the Coach's Award recipient in 2017. In track and field, he is a 15-time All Southern Division, 6-time All Class A, 4-time all Rhode Island and a one-time All New England in the 4 X 800. He volunteers at Special Olympics, Rhode Island Road Races, and is the co-race director of the Chocolate Milk Mile. Jack is applying to West Point.
