September 2017 Showcase Cinemas Student Athlete of the Month
Maddie Potts from Chariho High School , and Noah Iden from North Kingstown High School, have been named winners of the Showcase Cinemas Athlete of the Month for September 2017.
Maddie was a senior and a captain for Chariho’s girls soccer and lacrosse teams. An All-Division selection in both sports, Potts aspired to play soccer in college and contemplated studying forensic science. But Potts’ life was tragically cut short during a soccer game on September 23, 2017 when the senior collapsed from a brain aneurism while taking a penalty kick and later died. Potts’ sudden passing has produced a tremendous outpouring of support from the Rhode Island high school athletic community – and beyond – with numerous teams paying tribute to the Chariho teen and raising money for a charitable fund being established in her name. “The positive effect that she had on her coaches and teammates could never be measured. It never mattered to her who scored the goals or got the assists or what position she played, she just wanted the team to be successful. That was Maddie Potts.”
Noah is a senior at North Kingstown High School. He is a varsity kicker on the football team and one of the captains of the football team and letters in boys lacrosse. Iden is doing the ‘Kick-it Campaign’ in honor of his mother Kristin, who is a cancer survivor. As part of the national campaign, he is collecting donations for every point he scores, all of which will go toward pediatric cancer research. He is also active in the community, volunteering for the Payton’s Pace 5K, Jog for Julie 5K and volunteered ta Judy’s Kindness Kitchen in Providence. Iden is a member of the North Kingstown Leadership Academy and member of the Principal’s Honor Roll.
